Hi Everyone,
We want to hear from the association. Are there topics that you would like to know more about? Are there things that you don’t know the answers to? Is there a specific idea that you would like to suggest to help make the association better? Regardless of the topic, please let us know your views so we can improve and make BWGMHA even better than it already is.
Thanks
Let’s talk contact vs non-contact. Is there a need for a non-contact option for kids in Bradford? Share your thoughts.
Yes there is. Playing “most” teams from Thorton, Lefroy and Innisfil there is a hit first mentality. Being on the bench for a few of the Peewee LL games I have heard the “coaching” from the other bench where the focus is only on making the hit and not the passing, positioning or shooting skills. Those teams can play in their own league where the most penalty minutes can determine the winner. I am shocked at the difference in play between Minor Peewee Rep and Peewee Local League. While I know the calibre is very different the cheap hits and head hunting that goes on in Local League is insane. I don’t see my son returning to Peewee Local League next year. If he does not play rep he will be playing non-contact in Newmarket if there is no option in Bradford. The calibre of House League hockey in Newmarket is very good. I have seen my Peewee aged nephew play many games there….. another kid would would have preferred to play in Bradford if there was a non-contact option…..
I am hoping that Bradford offers a non-contact option next year perhaps joining with other centres (EG, Oak Ridges ???) and leave those centres in the SRMHL who want to hurt each other to play amongest themseleves….
I was wondering if there was a ruling somewhere about goals and the puck being found in the net. I have checked the rule book and there is only rules around a goal will be issued when the puck passes between the posts and below the cross bar and completely crosses the goal line. I have had a ref come to me and indicate that he had to call it a goal because he lost sight of the puck and after the whistle found the puck in the net. There was no goal indication at the time of the whistle but we had a centre ice face off.
I don’t think that this should be a goal, but how do we challenge this when/if it happens again?

I spoke to high level referee within the OMHA and it comes down to a judgement call. If the referee believes, although he did not see it enter net directly, that the puck was going in and finds it in the net he can make that call. Key is that it is done quickly and decisively. In this case if it was a younger official it may not have been quick enough and thus led to some questioning. Have to understand here that no matter if you agree or not official is not going change his call. So while you could try and ask for clarification on his ruling there is no way to challenge it to be overturned. As coaches we’ve all had calls go both ways like this so just hope next time it’s in your favour
